Symbol of the Alliance to Restore The Republic
|
The Alliance to Restore the Republic (also known as the Rebel Alliance and informally as the Rebellion) was a loose alliance of planetary-level, system-level and sector-level resistance forces formed in direct military opposition to the Galactic Empire. It was originally formed by a group of Loyalists determined to preserve the ideals of the Galactic Republic, which had transformed into the Empire. This grew to include former Separatists, neutral systems, and defecting Imperials. While less numerous and less powerful than the Imperial Military, the Alliance possessed a strong will to fight, dedicated soldiers, and brilliant commanders.[1]
Technology[]
Lacking the manufacturing resources the Galactic Empire employs, the Rebellion relies on raids and illegal channels to acquire their weaponry and technologies. And while these devices may not have the sophistication and precision-science that their Imperial counterparts offer, they have proven themselves more-than-effective in use on the battlefield.
Rebel land vehicles, for instance, include armored landspeeders, a heavy attack tank, and a smaller hover tank.[2] Although bulky and more difficult to maneuver than Imperial attack vehicles, they possess powerful weapon systems and durable armor, enough to challenge the exotic Imperial AT vehicle line.
An exception to this pattern, however, are the Rebellion starfighters. In order to adequately combat the overwhelming numbers of Imperial TIE fighters, Rebel fighters were designed to be exceptionally advanced craft. Most significant of these was the T-65 X-Wing Starfighter, which was made to balance speed and maneuverability with powerful laser cannons and anti-cruiser torpedoes.
